Reports have just come in from the Swedish set of the American-British remake starring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig which highlight several filming locations integral to the story.

Fans of the Millennium Trilogy, written by Stieg Larrson, have recently been treated to several behind-the-scenes videos showing set construction and scouting for David Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo; the first film in the trilogy. The American-British remake is hot on the heels of the Swedish-produced films, which were only released several years ago. Daniel Craig (Quantum of Solace, Casino Royale) has landed the lead role of investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist, with relatively unknown actress Rooney Mara (A Nightmare on Elm Street) set to portray the title character; Lisbeth Salander, an aggressive yet introverted computer hacker. Two other main cast members have already been revealed; Stellan Skarsgård as the Swedish industrialist Martin Vagner and Robin Wright will play Blomkvist's boss and love interest Erika Berger.
The Local Sweden has now uncovered several locations that are being prepped for the film including (stay with me now) Bollnäs, Gävle and Söderhamn; all within the Eastern Hälsingland province. Karin Åkerström, of the Uppsala police force, has also confirmed construction in the Uppsala area:
“They’re going to remake building facades and streets on parts of Drottninggatan. It’s supposed to look like it did in the 1960s. Therefore, we’ve given permits to place work trucks and such on the street.”
Filming will mostly take place in central Stockholm, where the majority of the story centers. In particular, the Mariatorget neighborhood on Södermalm, the Stockholm Courthouse (Rådhuset) and at three locations in the city’s archipelago.

The most notable news is the discovery of the Hofsta Säteri estate (pictured on the right), which will serve as the Vagner compound in the fictional town of Hedestad. The estate dates back to the 1300s and is located 140 kilometers southwest of Stockholm.
Principal photography for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is currently scheduled to being between early and mid October.
A theatrical release date of December 21st, 2011 has been set by Sony and Yellow Bird.
