Ridley Scott: Alien Prequel 'Will Be Really Tough, Really Nasty'
The director is getting his two part 3D prequel under way now and gives a few updates on the tone of the film. Damon Lindelof (Lost) is now sprucing up the script, which was originally written by Jon Spaihts.
A central component, the Space Jockey's story from the beginning of Alien, will be explored. However, the as yet untitled prequels will focus more on the origin of the aliens themselves and is set 30 years before the timeline of the original movie. In an interview with The Independent Ridley Scott explains:
"The film will be really tough, really nasty," he notes. "It's the dark side of the moon. We are talking about gods and engineers. Engineers of space. And were the aliens designed as a form of biological warfare? Or biology that would go in and clean up a planet?"
As for James Cameron's sequel Aliens which Scott was never asked to helm, the 72 year old director made sure to note these movies will be up to the same critical standards:
"Jim's raised the bar and I've got to jump to it," he says, in a friendly jibe at Cameron. "He's not going to get away with it."

Indy 4 was epic. It was so epic that when those digital gophers were dancing around at the start I began peeing myself and crying tears of joy.

I'm pretty disappointed that we're going to find out more about the space jockey. Part of the coolness for me about it is not knowing anything about it, except that it's a huge alien body. I'm not of the mind that every secret needs to be explained. I like to have some mysteries stay mysterious.
Indy 4 suffered from overuse of CG, and trying to make everything look huge. Some of the best moments during the original Indy flicks are on an actual practical set in cramped quarters. There are too many spots in Indy 4 where you're seeing too much at once. Too me, that's lazy film-making.
