PACIFIC RIM Director Guillermo del Toro Explains Why the Film Won't be Released in 3D

Pacific Rim, which stars Idria Elba, Charlie Hunnam, and Charlie Day and will be released during the summer 2013 through Warner Bros Pictures, is an upcoming sci-fi production that pays homage to monster movies of old.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Director Guillermo del Toro recently spoke about utilizing the popular RED Epic cameras during production on the film and stated again that it will not be released in 3D. He briefly explained how he was able to convince the studio that shooting in 3D or post-converting the film to that format didn't mesh with his vision:

"Originally there was a discussion that took a long time to overcome that was to make the movie 3D. And I didn't want to make the movie 3D because when you have things that big... the thing that happens naturally, you're looking at two buildings lets say at 300 feet [away], if you move there is no parallax. They're so big that, in 3D, you barely notice anything no matter how fast you move.

"To force the 3D effects for robots and monsters that are supposed to be big you are making their [perspective] miniaturized, making them human scale."

Pacific Rim is directed by Guillermo del Toro, produced by Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni and stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, Max Martini, Clifton Collins Jr., and Ron Perlman. Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures have scheduled it for theatrical release July 12, 2013.
