AMC Cancels THE KILLING; Fox Will Shop Third Season Around to Other Networks

After continuously low ratings throughout it's second season, AMC has chosen not to option the show for another year while it's production company plans to find a new home for it.

The Killing is based on the wildly successful Danish television series Forbrydelsen and tells the story of the murder of a young girl and the subsequent police investigation. The Killing ties together three distinct stories around a single murder including the detectives assigned to the case, the victim's grieving family, and the suspects. Set in Seattle, the story also explores local politics as it follows politicians connected to the case. As the series unfolds, it becomes clear that there are no accidents; everyone has a secret, and while the characters think they've moved on, their past isn't done with them.

AMC announced last week that they have dropped The Killing, which stars Mireille Enos, Billy Campbell, Joel Kinnaman, Michelle Forbes and Brent Sexton, from their slate of series:

"After much deliberation, we’ve come to the difficult decision not to renew The Killing for a third season. AMC is incredibly proud of the show and is fortunate to have worked with such a talented team on this project, from showrunner Veena Sud and our terrific partners at Fox Television Studios to the talented, dedicated crew and exceptional cast."

The show garnered a progressively larger audience during it's first season but after a disappointing season finale it couldn't make it's numbers up for season two, which recently ended. Producers of the show Fox Television Studios followed up the announcement from AMC with a statement of their own, giving fans of the young series hope of a continuation:

"Fox Television Studios is extremely proud of The Killing, the extraordinary writing staff and crew, and what we believe is one of the best casts on television. We will proceed to try to find another home for the show."
