18th Century North America. After more than 20 years of conflict, the 13 American colonies and the British Crown are on the brink of all out war. Battle lines are drawn. Bloodshed is inevitable.
Out of the embers of his burning village, a new assassin will rise. Born of Mohawk and British blood, his fight for freedom and justice will be forged in the flames of revolution.

Desmond Miles was a traveling hermit and descendant of numerous familial lines who had swore an allegiance to the Assassin Order; including individuals such as Aquilus, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, Ezio Auditore da Firenze and Connor Kenway. By age 16, Desmond became tired of living in hiding and aspired to pursue his own dreams. Using the minimal Assassin training skills he had obtained, Desmond fled from the Assassin compound he had grown up in and managed to travel from South Dakota to New York City, where he found employment as a bartender in a successful nightclub.

This is where his story picks up in the first Assassin's Creed game; a story that sandwiches the overarching plots of all the titles in the franchise. Ubisoft creative director Alex Hutchinson recently touched upon this theme at the company's most recent press event, and hints that Desmond's tale will come to a close during he course of Assassin's Creed III:

"There’s always a guy introducing it and he’s there every episode... but each game completes its own story. Assassin’s Creed 1 was Altair’s story. Ezio has been and gone. You can engage with these historical stories individually without having to necessarily understand Desmond’s story. But, yes, we eventually do have to wrap it all up.”

“I always pitched it to the guys on this game to think of it almost like Star Trek. Each game is a season [with] each big number is a sub-title. We’re not changing the universe but we’re being given the reins to the equivalent of The Next Generation. Yes it’s in the Star Trek universe, and that has certain immutable laws and there’s a base kind of tone to it, but within that you can do whatever you want.”

Assassin’s Creed III releases on October 30, 2012, for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.
