The X-Men: First Class and Prometheus star is on board to bring the popular video game franchise to the big screen for Ubisoft Motion Pictures.

Assassin's Creed is a historical/science fiction, third-person action-adventure game series from developer Ubisoft that, as of 2011, consists of four main games and a number of supporting materials. Several tie-in novels and comic book series are also being published. All of the Assassin's Creed games take place in 2012, featuring a protagonist who is unknowingly a descendent of a line of Assassins. He is initially kidnapped by the megacorporation Abstergo Industries, the modern-day face of the Knights Templar, and forced to use a device that sends him back in time to retrieve historical artifacts.
It's now been revealed that Micheal Fassbender, who recently came off the success of the independent drama Shame and Ridley Scott's Prometheus, has signed on to star in and co-produce the upcoming movie adaptation of the game. Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Paris-based Ubisoft Motion Pictures, said: "Michael Fassbender was our first choice to play the franchise's iconic hooded hero..Michael is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor."
The storyline for the film will stay in line with that of the game. There's no word at this point which major motion picture studio will distribute the film for Ubisoft since negotiations with Sony Pictures fell through early this year, but the freshman production house plans move forward on the project independently, "We're open to re-discuss with the key studios once the production package is finalized," added Baronnet.
