Keven's Music Review: MADONNA – MDNA
Published: March 26, 2012 - 8:57am
It doesn't take long to figure out that Madonna isn't effing around on her new and twelfth studio album 'MDNA'. By the time you finish listening to 'Gang Bang' it's clear she still has some serious issues. That aforementioned track details the pop singer shooting her lover in the head not before yelling, "I said drive bitch and while you're at it, die bitch!"
'MDNA' is everything her fans have come to expect and far more. Madonna revisits every musical element of her previous catalog, even dipping into the 80's and although the record seems all over the place, nothing ever stands out of place. I will say that I reviewed the far superior deluxe edition of 'MDNA' because it contains the vital track 'I F****d Up'. That song is a very eye-opening look into the pop icon's failed marriage to film director Guy Ritchie. It's vulgar, but not gratuitous and most importantly it's honest as hell.
If you aren't a fan of Madonna, then 'MDNA' likely won't change your mind, but if you've been intrigued by her past electronic dance hits like 'Music' or the pop inspired 'Ray of Light' then there will be something worth your time here. 'Girl Gone Wild' sounds like vintage 'Like a Virgin' Madonna; 'I'm Addicted' carries an all-out electronic vibe, while 'Give Me All Your Luvin' is a throwback piece of pulp pop. 'Falling Free' is a fitting and moving album closer, but if the review were to end there, it wouldn't be as positive.
The deluxe edition of 'MDNA' is essential. You'll get the standout 'I F****d Up', which is far too great to pass up plus you'll get the greasy but catchy party anthem 'B-Day Song'. If you hear one too many comparisons to Lady Gaga that's not your ears deceiving you. That being said, Madonna is the originator and she's proven that she's just as relevant today as she was decades ago.
This will be a very difficult pop album to top in 2012. Madonna has outdone herself with 'MDNA' and brought back dance music in a big way. I'm not talking about Skrillex or that wub wub wub, I'm talking that oldschool dance music. It's not for everyone and you won't catch my ass dancing anywhere to this, but Madonna has managed to get my attention in a big way.
