Relativity Media has approached director Tarsem Singh (The Cell) to helm The Brothers Grimm: Snow White while Universal Studios is still working on Snow White and the Huntsman.
Snow White and the Huntsman will be directed by Rupert Sanders and both Relativity and Universal are checking out Anne Hathaway, Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman's availability. Portman has shown interest in the lead role for The Brother's Grimm: Snow White. Brett Ratner, producer on The Brother's Grimm project made the following statement on why the project is no longer your children's fairy tale.
"This is not your grandfather's Snow White. Melisa (Wallack, screenwriter) went back to the 500 year old folk tale and put in some of the things that were missing from Walt Disney's film. His dwarves were miners, and here they are robbers. There is also a dragon that was in the original folk tale. Walt made one of the great movies of all time, but ours is edgy and there is more comedy. The original, made for its time, was soft compared to what we're going to do," said Ratner.
In Snow White and the Huntsman, the story will elaborate more on the Huntsman character and his original job being to take Snow White into the forest and kill her. Instead he ends up teaching her how to fight and becomes a mentor of sorts.
News also comes that Disney is also developing yet another child friendly version of Snow White, in which the dwarves are shaolin monks.
