GAME OF THRONES Creator Would Pen DOCTOR STRANGE Script if Marvel Studios Met His Demands

According to Marvel Comics mythology, Doctor Stephen Strange is one of the most powerful sorcerers in existence. He draws his power from three primary sources: the invocation of powerful mystic entities or objects, the manipulation of the universe's ambient magical energy, and his own psychic resources. Strange's magical repertoire includes energy projection and manipulation, matter transformation, animation of inanimate objects, teleportation, illusion-casting, mesmerism, thought projection, astral projection, dimensional travel, time travel and mental possession, to name a few, though the full range of his abilities is unknown. The character has graced comic book pages for over 50 years, was the focus of a low budget, live-action film in the 1970s, as well as being featured in the Super Hero Squad cartoon series and direct to video animated film.

Marvel President of Production Kevin Feige confirmed last year that a new feature film was in the works, and Grey's Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey has been openly lobbying for the role. But the recent success of The Avengers, production work on Iron Man, Thor and Captain America sequels as well as the fast tracking of Guardians of the Galaxy, there's been no forward motion on Doctor Strange.

At this year's WonderCon, Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin expressed interest in penning a Doctor Strange movie script if -- and only if -- Marvel Studio would bend to his demands:

"The character I'd have the most fun writing would be Doctor Strange,the master of the mystic arts, he was always one of my favorites ... but before I did that I'd have my lawyers meet with Marvel's lawyers and work out an iron-clad contract that would say that whatever I did in the story would continue on forever and would never be retconned, rebooted or reimagined out of the universe when some later writer decided to mess around with it ... I always hated reboots and retconns and the fact that a new writer comes in and 'un-does' what the previous writer did and brings dead characters back to life, kills new characters. ... but I did love Doctor Strange and if I was to write a Marvel character him and his dimensions would be it.

"I'd separate him off from the rest of the Marvel universe and not make him part of a team. He doesn't really fit any of that stuff, he's a guy that shouldn't even be known to the rest of the heroes, living on the edge of the Marvel Universe protecting the world and our dimension and plane from dangers and forces out there that the other characters like Spider-Man and The Avengers don't even dream exist. He's our wall against Cthullu and the Old-Ones and the dread Dormammu. That's when Doctor Strange was at his best, Stan Lee and Ditko were [writing] him in just that manner."

Marvel Studios is prepping to release Iron Man 3 on May 3rd, 2013, followed by Thor: The Dark World on November 8th, 2013. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is scheduled for release on April 4th, 2014, and Guardians of the Galaxy will hit theaters on August 1st, 2014.
