Zoë's Book Review: PETER AND THE STARCATCHER - THE ANNOTATED SCRIPT OF THE BROADWAY PLAY

Peter and the Starcatcher is based off the best selling children’s novel of the same title by Pulitzer Prize winning authors Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. It garnered 9 Tony Away Nominations since it’s opening on April 15th, 2012, wining 5 of them including Best Featured Actor for Christian Borle as the villainous yet ridiculous pirate Black Stache.

Recently released was The Annotated Script of the Broadway Play, penned by scriptwriter Rick Elice. This detailed coffee table collection not only gives us the full script of the show, but every page features pictures of the production including beautiful two page spread set photos. The highlight of this book is the running commentary by Barry, Pearson, Elice and other crewmembers that give a unique insight into the history of the character developments as well as stories about it's transition from page to stage.

At nearly 200 pages long, this book is just as charming and magical as the Tony Award winning production. As a fan of the play, I knew I had to own this book. The writing is incredibly intelligent and witty, catering to the child in every adult instead of children themselves. While reading through the book I was able to catch jokes and plot points I might have missed during the production from laughing too much. I also gained even more respect for the cast and crew from learning about the incredible journey they all went through to bring this show to Broadway.

Even those who are unable to travel to New York City to see Peter and the Starcatcher live get the chance to experience this whimsical and clever play for themselves through this book. It is a must have for fans of the show and for fans of all ages of the boy who would never grow up. Cover yourself in “star stuff”, grab your sword, and take trip to Never Land within the pages of this fanciful addition to your collection.
