Harriet Vanger, a scion of one of Sweden’s wealthiest families disappeared over forty years ago. All these years later, her aged uncle (Christopher Plummer) continues to seek the truth. He hires Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig), a crusading journalist recently trapped by a libel conviction, to investigate.

He is aided by the pierced and tattooed computer prodigy Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara). Together they tap into a vein of unfathomable iniquity and astonishing corruption.

The latest adaption of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo currently holds a strong 85% approval rating on RottenTomatoes.com Rooney Mara has also garnered almost universal praise for her portrayal of the internally tortured Lisbeth Salander; a role that previously helped catapult Swedish actress Noomie Rapace to stardom. A multi-faceted marketing campaign -- grand in scale for an R-rated property -- that included world wide scavenger hunts via Twitter and Tumblr, clothing tie-ins from H&M and a much talked about score from Golden Globe and Academy Award winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross preceded the film's theatrical release; but none have really helped it reach financial success yet.

According to Box Office Mojo the film stands at $60 million domestic take with an additional $12 million from overseas theaters in the two weeks since release, which is fairly decent considering it's production budget rested around $80 million. Now, a representative of Sony Pictures has solidified to Entertainment Weekly that progress of the expected sequel is definitely moving ahead:

“[Dragon Tattoo] continues to do strong business and nothing has changed with respect to development of the next book."

There's still no word whether David Fincher will be at the helm of either the second or third installment, though he has stated that if he were to return he would prefer to film the two back to back. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, directed by David Fincher and starrring Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig, Stellan Skarsgard, Robin Wright, Christopher Plummer, Joel Kinnaman, Goran Visnjic and Yorick van Wageningen, is now playing in theaters.
