HALF-LIFE 3 Rumors Dispelled by Game's Co-Creator
Published: December 29, 2011 - 9:14pm
A recent flurry of speculation regarding the next, and yet unannounced, installment of the widely popular Half Life video game franchise has caused one of the game's creators to officially set the record straight.

Game development company Valve (Half-Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead) have always been known for their creativity and ability to connect with fans. To augment the release of this year's Portal 2 the studio launched a massive Alternate Reality Game. Over the past few months players joining in on the fun were noticing Half Life related achievements and Easter Eggs. Earlier this month, an image appeared online purporting a Valve employee sporting a Half Life 3 t-shirt (pictured below). The most recent batch of rumors involved a tentative announcement email chain from Valve Managing Director Gabe Newell, which were later proven to be fabrications, and the possibility of hidden messages in "speeches" given by Portal personality sphere Wheatley at the VGAs.
Up until now, no word has come down the pike from anyone associated with the company regarding these occurrences. Chet Faliszek -- co-creator of Valve's three most popular titles including Half Life -- took to the Steam forums to officially refute the rumors:

You are being trolled.
There is no ARG.
Wheatley’s speech was set in Portal 2 fiction – that is all.
There has been no directive from Gabe to leak anything. That is all false.
I just want to say this so there is no confusion. This is the community trolling the community nothing more. While it is nice to see people excited about anything HL, I hate seeing people be trolled like this.
Thanks

The Half-Life series is one of the greatest examples of storytelling in gaming ever. The ending of HL2: Episode 2 might me the most emotionally resonant things I've seen in a video game to date. I don't know if I would call it "trolling" though. Probably more just wishful thinking combined with the crazy internet culture.
