Starship Troopers, the 1997 film based loosely on the 1959 military science fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein, has spawned three direct to video sequels and a video game; now, a cinematic reboot is apparently being planned.
Directed by Paul Verhoeven, Starship Troopers was the only theatrically released film in the Starship Troopers franchise and nominated for an Academy Award for visual effects in 1998. Starring Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, Dina Meyer, Jake Busey, Neil Patrick Harris, Clancy Brown and Michael Ironside, the film follows a young soldier named Johnny Rico and his exploits in the futuristic Mobile Infantry military unit. Rico's military career progresses from recruit to non-commissioned officer and finally to officer against the backdrop of an interstellar war between mankind and an arachnid-like alien species called "Bugs".
A recent report states that producer Neal Moritz (The Green Hornet, 21 Jump Street) is developing a Starship Troopers remake for Sony Pictures. No other details have become available at this time; neither is is clear how soon to the studio would hope to push the project into production.
