EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: PIRANHA 3DD Director John Gulager Shares Details About the Upcoming Horror Sequel

I was able to catch up with Feast trilogy director John Gulager at the local Wild Waters Adventures water park and discuss a few details about the upcoming and anticipated sequel to the 2010 horror film titled Piranha 3DD set for theatrical release on November 23, 2011.

There’s something in the water . . . again. And this time no one is safe from the flesh eating fish as they sink their razor sharp teeth into the visitors of the best summer attraction, The Big Wet Water Park.

John Gulager has reunited with the writers of Feast to bring Piranha fans the property's upcoming sequel which, like the first film, pays homage to the Jaws franchise. This time around the filmmakers took a page from Jaws 3D, which was based in a water park. "...It was the Shamu [Sea World] sort of water park; ours is more of the little Mom and Pop water slide water park instead. The piranhas get into the plumbing... get into all that kind of stuff..."

Gulager says that "anything and everything" fans can expect to happen when piranhas are unleashed in a water park will be in the sequel. In comparison to the first film Gulager conveyed the sequel is "kind of sillier," but will still bring the gore and nudity as the first film did. "It's Piranha 3DD and we bring the DDs!" When I addressed my concerns about how the piranhas carnage in a water park would compare to a giant lake considering the victims can just jump out of the pools he replied, "That was one of our jokes. I was thinking... even in the lake, if you look at it, it's about 15 minutes for someone to go about 20 ft. You know? All they have to do is get out of the water so it's still the same thing."

In the first film, it was revealed that the killer fish responsible for the film's death toll were merely the babies, and that there were still bigger fish to fry... much bigger fish. When I inquired about the giant piranhas playing a role in the sequel he teased, "Maybe you'll see bigger ones... and smaller ones. Like little hatchlings maybe." He then added, "we kind of felt obligated [to include them]... You will see big ones but not as many as maybe we started out with in the script. [laughs] You know how that goes."

Word was going around that the awaited trailer was scheduled to be released before the sci-fi horror film Apollo 18, which was later stated as false. Gulager says he's not sure when the trailer will be brought out but he has seen it and says "it's pretty awesome" and if you're a fan of this kind of film then you will dig it.

From Feast trilogy director John Gulager and starring Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush, David Koechner, Chris Zylka, Katrina Bowden, Gary Busey, Christopher Lloyd and David Hasselhoff, Piranha 3DD hits theaters June 1st, 2012.

I loved the 1st film and the sequel is in my "must see" list of the year! Bring the DDs!

Wow, great interview! I didn't know David Koechner is in it, he's hilarious! It sounds like (from the interview) he doesn't take himself too seriously, so that's cool. I might go see this.

awesome interview Kim - glad to know that tidbit about the giant piranhas. it also sounds like this flick has a loose association with the first considering Gulager felt 'obligated' to include the big ones despite maybe not wanting to.

i'm worried about the 'silly' factor being a little too high though - the Feast movies were ridiculous and I stopped watching the second one after the whole baby thing. Not my style - so I hope Piranha 3DD doesn't venture into that territory - although I'm assuming it has to considering we're in a water park - likely loaded with kids...

Yeah I'm kinda worried about the silly thing too. I mean the first was ridiculous but the director was still trying to make an actual horror flick. When he compared it to Jaws 3, my first thought was "but that's such a bad movie..." lol I mostly want the carnage and I still can't wait to see this sequel. I'm sure it will be a fun flick like the first. Big Grin

i'm hoping he's meaning Jaws 3 in terms of scenery only.
