THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Star Anne Hathaway Responds to Catwoman Costume Negativity
Published: August 9, 2011 - 8:39am
Batman fans were very divided after Warner Bros released the first official image of Hathaway in costume for director Chris Nolan's upcoming project, and the actress has a few choice word for detractors.

The Dark Knight Rises is the highly anticipated final installment of Warner Bros and DC Entertainment's new Batman film franchise. Christopher Nolan has returned to direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by himself and David S. Goyer. Details about the film's storyline are scarce, but it has already been established that one of villains set to take on the Batman (Christian Bale) will be the powerhouse known as Bane (Tom Hardy). Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway), better known to comics fans as Catwoman, will also have a central role in the movie. The will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

The first image of Anne Hathaway as Catwoman was released online last week [pictured to the right] and many Batman film fans were scratching their heads at the significant changes made to the costume. MTV recently caught up with Hathaway, who offered her take on the reaction:
"I was not going to admit it: I asked someone to send me a few reactions [to the photo]... and I happen to know that MTV's reaction was 'meh.'"
"What I am happy to say is, if you didn't like the photo, you only see about a 10th of what that suit can do. And if you did like the photo, you have excellent taste."
The Dark Knight Rises stars Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard, Josh Pence, Daniel Sunjata, Diego Klattenhoff, Burn Gorman, Nestor Carbonell, Alon Aboutboul, Matthew Modine, Tom Conti, Brett Cullen, Chris Ellis and Joey King and is scheduled to hit theaters July 20th, 2012.

Well, I certainly hope that one of the things the suit "can do" is burn those frakking glasses and turn them into a cowl.

Yes, in Nolan I trust. . but this costume concept seems more Batgirl than Catwoman.
Hellboy
she's lying...

The main thing the suit should do is look like Catwoman, if that's not part of that other 90% that I don't see then I don't care. No one would ever look at that picture and think that is Catwoman.

Get ready for Nolan and Hathaway to make 90% of you fanboys look stupid again, just like him and Ledger did after The Dark Knight was released. Love it!

i'm with DKnight on this one. no point in complaining now when i know next year all the fanboys will be proven wrong.

What was drastically changed about the Joker's aesthetic in TDK? I don't think it was anything remotely close to the changes made to Bane and Catwoman in this flick

I'd say it's on par with Catwoman. Joker had the scars, dark eyes (this one's debatable) and long hair, those are pretty much outside his normal look.

No way. When you saw Heath as Joker you could tell right away that he was the Joker. Can you say the same thing for Catwoman or Bane?

That's true, but I also don't think this is the final version we'll see, but there's always a slim chance that I'm wrong

I think Nolan has a bit of Joker in him and likes to tease the hell out of fans. She should definitely have cat ears in the movie. I can't believe he'd bring in Selina Kyle in his last Bat movie and not have her be Catwoman.
Anthony3
If I showed someone a pic of the Joker they would know right away who it was. Catwoman from that pic, no way, there is nothing Catwoman about it. Wearing a black body suit and old lady terminator glasses makes her Catwoman? I hope she wears the real Catwoman suit but if thats it then that's some very uncreative bullshit right there. It's bad enough that Bane looks like crap and is actually smaller than Batman. But who knows, maybe he will hulk up or something.

and that (and the underwhelming teaser) is why i am quickly losing faith in this film...

Drastically changed? Your kidding right? Don't you remember the lame azz "why is Joker not perma white silliness"?
Like I said. Can't wait for Nolan to make fanboys look stupid....AGAIN! lol
Nope. I wasn't scouring the net for movie news back then. What I do remember is that every pic of the Joker looked like [drum roll] the Joker.
I've shown pics of both Bane and Catwoman to people and no one that isn't constantly following TDKR news could tell me who they were.
I never said this movie will be bad. But so far, as a Batman fan, I can say it's confusing and slightly disappointing

Like it matters. I trust Nolan more than 99% of whiny fanboys. Plus this isn't the full Catwoman reveal suit anyway.
Nobody wants to see a overexaggerated steroided up freak monster Bane either.

I'd definitely say that this Catwoman isn't a "drastic" change, even if this is the extent of her garb. Catwoman's never had a definitive "look" over the years, not like Bane. But it's basically her, black bodysuit, belt with pouches, long gloves and boots, and those night-vision goggle things almost look like they could be cat ears. It's not ideal, but I think it'd do in a pinch, and certainly offers a tiny bit more realism.

So you talked to everyone? Oh good. Thanks, I was going to try and get around to that later today, but I'm just way too busy, glad someone handled that...
Generalizations are bad m'kay.

It's kind of hard when most fanboys love to use generalizations isn't it?

Thankfully, we're not "most fanboys" are we, we're better than that

"Nobody wants to see a overexaggerated steroided up freak monster Bane either."
Uhhh...that's what Bane IS.
Nobody wants to see a Killer Croc that looks like hes part crocodile.
Nobody wants to see a Riddler with question marks on him.
Nobody wants to see a Mr.Freeze with a glass dome on his head and a freeze gun.
Nobody wants to see a Joker that looks like a clown.
Nobody wants to see a Two-Face that looks like his face has two different sides.
Catwoman should look like Catwoman, whether you love Nolan or not. The current Catwoman from the comics could be easily adapted to live action, and should be. But you did say thats not the final Catwoman suit so I should just take your word for it since you have the inside info.

I'm still of the opinion that one can both dislike the costume(s) and look forward to the film being good. There's still a lot going for it (director, cast, ect.). My question is more for the WB/DC marketing people. If there is more to the suit, why release this pic on the movie's official website? I'm a big fan of Hathaway and think she'll give a great performance no matter how plain the suit is. See, there's room for middle ground in this whole discussion.

LOL, I'll be the first to say that the costume is a big whatever, but at least it's not distracting. *ahem, Bat nipples, ahem* We've been impressed with great visuals before just to be let down in all other areas, such as the most important: storytelling. Is the costume a let down for fans? Yeah. Does it mean that the film is going to be horrible? Probably not.

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DKnight007
Nolan said himself that this would their interpretation of Bane. It shouldn't surprise anyone that Nolans version is not an overexaggerated roided up freak of a monster like he is in the comics. I guess this means the movie will suck right?? Hahaha. Suuuure
Anthony3
I don't see anyone saying the movie will suck.
