SCOOP: HELLBOY Creator Mike Mignola Says Guillermo Del Toro Will Never Return to the Film Franchise
During his panel at the 2011 Calgary Comic Expo, the creator of Darkhorse Comics' favorite son of Satan confirmed that, after much speculation, a third film is very unlikely.
Hellboy, a large, red-skinned demon with a tail, sawed-off horns and an oversized right hand made of stone, is a comic book hero who is for the Bereau of Paranormal Research and Defense. Joined by teammates who are equally as strange, though not nearly as powerful, Hellboy has been transitioned into two live-action film over the past several years.
Director Guillermo del Toro, who helmed both Hellboy in 2004 and Hellboy II: The Golden Army 2008, was given much of the credit for making the action-fantasy adaptations critically and financially popular. Ron Perlman, sporting plenty of red-tinted makeup and prosthetics, portrayed the character in both projects and, like del Toro, has expressed interest in returning for another installment.
Mike Mignola, the creator, artist and writer of Hellboy's comic counterpart was one of the presenters at this weekend's Calgary Comics Expo. Though he attended the convention to discuss the comics future of the horned hero, questions of a third Hellboy film were bound to come up. I had the opportunity to ask whether or not director Guillermo Del Toro's intentions of filming a third Hellboy movie, as he's recently stated, were still accurate:
"Last I heard he said he would not make it. Guillermo -- who I love -- in every interview there's a new story on what his next movie is and he honestly believes he's going to do all these things. But last I heard, he said 'I'm never gonna get back to Hellboy. I'm not surprised because he won't live long enough to do a tenth of the movies he's told me he's going to make.
"I can't imagine him (Del Toro) making a Hellboy 3. He's very enthusiastic and says he's going to do all these things....ummm....he's cute [laughed]."
The popular author went on to express his desire to stay focused on the world of comics for the time being and near future, even though film, gaming and TV offers are still prevalent.

The man is almost fifty, the average film takes about three years to do from pre-production to theaters, and he's got a ton of ideas. I agree with Mike, on this one. I bet he's really happy that the odds are against Del Toro, though. He once said that he didn't want Hellboy to die on film before he did in the comics and he's still got a good 15 years left until he's done writing the character.
