DC Entertainment's Geoff Johns Hopes for More Than a GREEN LANTERN Film Trilogy

The company's Chief Creative Officer and "Green Lantern guru" discusses his involvement with the comic book adaptation starring Ryan Reynolds and plans for it's future.

Green Lantern

In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan.

Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal is clearly the missing piece to the puzzle, and along with his determination and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had: humanity. With the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax…he will become the greatest Green Lantern of all.

Though only being available for general audiences to watch since last night, Green Lantern is already shrouded in controversy following a last minute marketing blitz and torrent of negative reviews from film and comics fans alike. DC Entertainment's Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns, who has been the mastermind behind all things Green Lantern for the better half of the last decade, recently touched upon his involvement in the recently released project as well as hopes/plans to continue the franchise:

"I was there as a Green Lantern guru. (Laughs.) I've been writing Green Lantern stories for seven years, so when they started talking about the film [in 2008], they brought me in to tap into what I was doing with the books and make sure we were celebrating everything that was Green Lantern. A lot of the heavy lifting for me was when Michael Goldenberg was writing a draft of the script. We worked a lot on the mythology, making sure that its foundation, which is about overcoming fear, and the core characters were represented. But it was a really collaborative effort. I wasn't a cop. It wasn't like, "Make his boots shorter!" That's useless. It was more about, "Why is Hal Jordan a compelling character? What is [arch-nemesis] Sinestro's real motivation? Why is he so driven? What are the attributes of the [Green Lantern Corps'] Guardians [of the Universe] that you want to accentuate?"

"It borrows a lot from the recent changes that were made to the mythology, Green Lantern: Secret Origin, which is a book I wrote a few years ago [2008] that retells the origin of Hal Jordan. But the film also takes things from all decades of Green Lantern stories.

"There are definitely plans for more Green Lantern films. I would hope it's more than a trilogy. I think Green Lantern has a lot of movies in it, a lot of stories to tell. The Flash, which I wrote the treatment for, is also in development, but I can't say much more than that."

Directed by Martin Campbell and starring Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Mark Strong, Peter Sarsgaard, Tim Robbins and Angela Bassett, Green Lantern is is now playing domestically in 2D and 3D theaters.

Geoff, we always have good conversations when we're at a con. You write great stories and have done so much for Green Lantern and the DC Universe. I attended the Midnight Release for Green Lantern and I'm wiling to admit that I did not like it. A lot of the elements you've written into the Green Lantern mythos weren't there. Characters were weak and the story didn't seem strong enough to me. Sorry man, see ya at the next con.

Kev, if you're wanting to watch a fun popcorn flick, you'll definitely enjoy it. It's certainly not without it's faults (there are plenty), but it definitely is possible to enjoy it.

The local TV and radio stations seem to be giving it a fair review. I am waiting to see (when the job lets me!) it myself and what others think in my area. I wear a ring but in the old format logo instead of the newer design. Now, maybe a mask like Interesting John but then I don't want to Bogart his original work. Smile

^This. Maybe it was my lowered expectations from seeing it horrendously bashed for the past couple days, but I certainly enjoyed it. It was still kind of underwhelming but that has more to do with what it could have been then what it was (Even though they are basically the same thing), IMO. I still think I'll go see it again in 3D because I opted for 2D.

I just watched it and was greatly entertained. I'm looking forward to the next one. I'm hoping that they do more than three and bring in the Red Lanterns, sometime. They're my favorites.

You may be right! Yahoo users gave the movie a B+, and it's got a decent 6.5 on imdb. Same goes with Metacritc - much more positive reaction from the general audience.

Plenty of sub-par movies have made bank, but this is probably the first time I hope it's the case.

I definitely want to see a sequel and not wait for a reboot, as long as the movie-makers take in all the criticism and read every hate mail to fix their ways. So Hal got off to a rough start, he deserves a second chance!

Man I just shake my head every time I think of what went wrong with the writing of this film. If there is the possibility of a sequel, please give this to Nolan and his brother to write the screenplay. Everything is darn near perfect except for the writing of the story. I really don't want a reboot cause Mark Strong gave one hell of a performance for the 15 minutes he was in the movie and no one can fulfill his shoes in this role in my eyes.

Give this movie to better writers or a director that will demand everything in writing and the story that it needs to succeed. Cg won't be a problem for the next one cause they got all the groundwork in place.

It was entertaining. Jumped around a lot, but glad I saw it. There's quite a bit of potential for a kick ass sequel if they do Sinestro right. Even without developing why he hates the Guardians, it could be a good movie.

I don't think Sinestro has ever really "hated" the Guardians, I think he just disagrees with their methods.
