Rock of Ages will be directed by Adam Shankman. The script was written by the songbook scribe Chris D’Arienzo and was touched up by Little Miss Sunshine writer Michael Arndt. Filming is expected to begin this summer with a release in 2012 planned.

Rock of Ages is set in the late 1980s, where an aspiring rocker, Drew, works as a busboy in the trademark Hollywood bar/club The Bourbon Room. He falls instantly for a cute girl, Sherrie, who arrives from Kansas hoping to make it big in acting. After being hired by the bar, Sherrie accepts Drew's invitation to have a picnic at a place overlooking Los Angeles. There, he mistakenly suggests that the two are just friends. Later, at the Bourbon Room, ladies' man and lead singer for his band Arsenal, Stacee Jaxx, will be playing that night and instantly hits it off with Sherrie and the two have sex in the bar's bathroom. Subsequently, Drew proves his musical ability in the club and is chosen to open for Stacee. A record producer in the club offers Drew a contract, which he accepts.

Shankman discussed how the role was created to centralize the story of the film, "There are so many plotlines in the piece, we thought it would be fun to create a villain, and a cultural discussion point," he said. "She's the moral majority person, kind of like if Tipper Gore and Anita Bryant had a love child in that era. To have a great actress who won in this genre with Chicago is wonderful." It was reported that Zeta-Jones will get to put her pipes to use again for this part as the character will singing to 80s classics along with the rest of the cast.

Alec Baldwin was recently added to the cast as recording exec Lonny Barnett. Julianne Hough will star as Sherrie, a small time girl trying to make it big in L.A. She will get to wail on 'High Enough' and 'Every Rose Has Its Thorn.' She will also get the honor of conveying a sex scene in a men's bathroom and showcase her character as an exotic dancer. Tom Cruise will be placed in the role of rock star Stacee Jax. Cruise will get to sing a rendition of Bon Jovi’s ‘Wanted Dead or Alive' and Foreigner's 'I Want To Know What Love Is.' Mary J. Blige is cast as Justice Charlier and will belt out 'Any Way You Want It.'

Russell Brand is said to be in the running for a large role in the film, but has not reached any deals as of yet. Contrary to what had been reported earlier, The Hollywood Reporter is posting that Anne Hathaway will not be appearing in the movie musical.
