Marvel Confirms Plans To Kill a Main Character Every Quarter
Published: February 11, 2011 - 5:40pm
David Gabriel, VP Sales at Marvel Comics has revealed plans to kill a main character every single quarter due to the success of the recent media coverage of the Human Torch's death.

Gabriel confirmed the news with Bleedingcool and also followed the bold statement with “this is not a joke.”
Not long ago, the Human Torch met his demise in the pages of Fantastic Four #587 on Wednesday, January 26th. Marvel had teased for weeks leading up to the issue that a member of Marvel's first ever super hero team would ultimately meet their fate. Due to the massive media craze leading up to the Human Torch biting the dust and the fallout surrounding his death it looks like Marvel plans to get rid of a few more on the roster.
Gabriel did however specify that these storylines are NOT about killing characters. What’s key is what comes AFTER the deaths. For example, after the Human Torch death, Spidey joined the team and the concept of “FF” got an entirely new focus as Future Foundation.
You can read more about the Human Torch getting extinguished HERE. Although there is no more Fantastic Four, former members Mr. Fantastic, Thing and Invisible Woman have joined forces with Spider-Man to create The Future Foundation. You can read more about that and check out Spider-Man's sweet new white costume HERE.

This is why I dropped every Marvel title. Now I only read Brightest Day since that's where the real story and characterization is at. If Marvel thinks that since FF nabbed over 100000 copies, killing characters will grab the attention of 100000 readers repeatedly; they are terribly misinformed. This is a plain stupid idea, which will most likely involve resurrections over and over again. They should focus on making quality stories of each individual character. If Death is a necessary thing, they should do it right. Marvel went from an excess supply of events to now excess deaths.

I'm still a Marvelite. This doesn't bother me at all. I still consider them to be the all time best comic book publishing company.

I would say that Marvel and DC are the best comic book publishing companies. They are equal in their own ways. The unfortunate thing is that today they are the worst companies in terms of quality. Image comics and Dark Horse have much more interesting stories now.

My sentiments exactly. This is the reason I no longer buy comic books.

It seems ridiculous that their sales would be bad enough to kill off characters this often to try and draw people in. I didn't bite when Cap died, I didn't bite when Punisher "died" and got turned into a God-awful zombie killa, and I sure as hell didn't bite when HT bit it. There was a time when "death" in comics meant something, and then both companies started resurrecting dead characters and caused "death" to lose its value. Now if Marvel decides to do this, they may as well not even call them "deaths" anymore, but sabbaticals, or leaves of absence.

At least they're admitting this is a cheap trick to boost sales.

Atleast there admitting its to boost sale and like there saying its about the aftermath which al ready looks interesting spidey joining the future foundation is pretty cool. Long as they keep the characters dead for a while its all good. But seriously all this high publicity comic book death was started by DC with the "death" of Superman. Superman started the super hero genre and he also started the fake super hero death sub genre
Ibz
two of the more high profiled "deaths" Batman and Cap have led to there former sidekicks taking up there mantel, and both of them coming back and moving on to bigger things. The way the deaths happen are not always executed well but the aftermath is always interesting

my exact thoughts.

Well, here we have it folks....coming soon, brought to you by Marvel Comics....Blackest Evening!

Aaah, Piccard says it all.
Looks like Disney's influence on Marvel has proven to be as disturbing as Hitler's obsession with Disney.
Even low budget horror movies understand it's not about death, but how you lived. I know the guy said it's "about what comes after their death" but still. He decided to kill a character every quarter. How childish is that? OH! You liked when I did the THING! I'll do the thing AGAIN! LoOOK! I DO THE THING! I DO THE THING! I DO THE THING! Hey... why aren't you paying attention?! I"M DOIN' THA THIIIIIING!
The really sad part is when all these characters come back to life next year because "it was all about your FEAR of loosing Johnny Storm! They we're never really dead at all Dorothy!"
Ah well. It could be fun. Just don't take it seriously. Even Bucky came back.

So instead of wanting to tell a great story, they just want to make money?

Hey, it was a great gimmick in Great Lakes Avengers when they did it every issue!
Wait, this isn't a comedy. They should stop listening to Mark Millar. Grigori, I really don't think this is a Disney thing. Since Civil War, I think it's been a lot more about shock than story. Marvel still puts out some good stuff though (I thought Young Avengers was way better than the actual Civil War event.) I'm a bigger fan of Marvel's slightly lower profile stuff.

Complete Bullshit. I new Disney would [frick] this company........sorry for the language.

I was totally being sarcastic about the Disney thing. I really doubt that Disney would say, "Hey, why don't you kill people off? Murder is cool... you should do more of it, on an epic Mickey scale!"
No... there are plenty of idiots in the world. We don't need Disney to help us make bad decisions.
The way I think of it is this- Death is a natural part of life. The heroes have avoided death for too long and NEED to start dying to show us that they are mortal. What Marvel needs, is to make them STAY DEAD. Once you can't come back from death, it becomes something to fear. People stop reading comics because it's the same stuff all over again... but make the people stay dead and you don't need the Scarlet Witch to screw up reality just to keep the level of mutants under control.
Setting a number is the stupid thing. If we KNOW someone is going to die, it's just another gimick. If they'd said, "We plan to kill more characters off... you won't know who or when... but death has come to Marvel." THEN I would have been interested.

You know, it was a novelty when Superman, Hal Jordan, and Captain Mar-Vel died, but now? This is abuse.
