Sarah Jones and Jorge Garcia have been cast in lead roles for the next series by J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot and Warner Bros. which is mysteriously described to be "about secrets and the most infamous prison of all time."

Jorge Garcia, known for his portrayal of Hugo 'Hurley' Reyes on Abrams' hit Lost series, is set to play the hippy geek Dr. Diego Soto, who in the series, is the world's foremost expert on Alcatraz. This will be the second series in which Garcia has worked with Abrams; coincidentally both are drama series surrounding an island. Also just like with the pilot for Lost, the actor was the first one signed onto the pilot of the new drama.
Joining the former Lost star is Sarah Jones, who has been cast as the character Rebecca Madsen, described as a smart, thoughtful and a little obsessive police officer. Jones is recently known for her role on Sons of Anarchy as Polly Zobelle.
It is said that the series "centers on a group of missing Alcatraz prisoners and guards who reappear in the present day. It chronicles the efforts of a team of FBI agents to track them down and unravel the mystery behind their disappearance thirty years prior."
Alcatraz's earlier drafts were written by Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt but Elizabeth Sarnoff penned the final version. Sarnoff will also serve as showrunner and executive producer along with Abrams and Bryan Burk. Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt are said to co-executive produce and Danny Cannon will be directing the pilot which is scheduled to begin shooting in January around San Francisco and Vancouver.
