With principal photography about to begin on the American adaptation of Stieg Larsson's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Plummer lands the role of wealthy industrialist Henrik Vagner.

Harriet Vanger, a scion of one of Sweden’s wealthiest families disappeared over forty years ago. All these years later, her aged uncle continues to seek the truth. He hires Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently trapped by a libel conviction, to investigate. He is aided by the pierced and tattooed punk prodigy Lisbeth Salander. Together they tap into a vein of unfathomable iniquity and astonishing corruption.

In 2009, Yellow Bird, who still maintain the film rights to the Millennium Trilogy* series, partnered with Sony Pictures to bring the stories to American cinema. David Fincher (Fight Club) is set to direct The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, the first in the trilogy, from a screenplay by Steven Zaillian (Schindler's List). Daniel Craig (Casino Royale) will portray Mikael Blomkvist, with Rooney Mara landing what will undoubtedly be her breakout role as Lisbeth Salander. Stellan Skarsgård (Thor) has landed the role of Swedish industrialist, and murder suspect, Martin Vanger; and Robin Wright (Pippa Lee) will round out the main cast as Millennium's Editor-in-Chief Erika Berger.
The Hollywood Reporter has just revealed that veteran stage and screen actor Christopher Plummer joins the cast as Swedish industrialist Henrik Vagner. The wealthy patriarch, and recluse, of the Vagner family lives in the fictional town of Hedestad, Sweden; the 700 year old Hofsta Säteri estate (which you can see here) has been chosen to act as the Vagner estate for the film.
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is scheduled for theatrical release December 21st, 2011.
