The popular actress is rumored to be taking over Angelina Jolie's former role in the upcoming sci-fi film.

Gravity, an $80 million 3D film written and directed by Alfonso Cuaron, centers on a woman stranded on a space station after satellite debris slams into it and wipes out the rest of the crew. Angelina Jolie backed out of the lead role several weeks ago, and the studio's replacement shortlist has been rumored to include Sandra Bullock, Natalie Portman, Naomi Watts, Marion Cotillard, Carey Mulligan, Sienna Miller, Abbie Cornish, Rebecca Hall, Olivia Wilde, Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively.
Now, is reporting that an offer has been put out to Portman, who garnered high praise for Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan which recently premiere at Telluride. Warner Bros, the studio backing the film, has yet to confirm this information.
The focal point of Gravity is the solitary struggle of the female lead, similar to Tom Hank's role in Castaway. Robert Downey Jr. also has signed on for a small part in the movie, though the extend of his role is still unknown.

Hahaha before I read the article I was thinking, 'what role could Morgan Freeman possibly have in the Hobbit?' Just judging by the pic, I could see him playing a hobbit. That's too bad for him though, really seems like he wanted the role.
I could watch Portman float around in space for 2 hours for sure. As long as it isn't Sandra Bullock, I'm not a fan. I'm not that familiar with a few of the other actresses though.

Yeah, my mind went to Moran Freeman too
I think he'd make a good Bilbo though, sad.

*Sigh*
I totally thought Martin was an awesome choice for Bilbo. Anyone else will pale in comparison and that makes me a sad panda.

I totally wanted Morgan Freeman for Bilbo! Martin may look the part, but he doesn't look Presidential the way Morgan does. A short hairy-footed Morgan Freeman? Priceless...
